Wood Wick Candle Care

Congratulations on your brand new Manarlee Wood Wick Candle! Be sure to have a read of the following information to avoid any issues.

Why use wood wicks?

Our Manarlee Wood Wick Candles provide a more unique burning experience than a usual cotton wick candle. Imagine a soft crackling candle on a cold winters night fragrancing the room with your favourite scent. At Manarlee, that is exactly what you will get! Wood Wicks also burn a lot slower than a cotton wick so you will get the absolute maximum burn time from your candle = more bang for your buck!

Wood wicks can be temperamental and each wick is unique, varying slightly in their thickness and grain. Our Wood Wicks have been carefully sourced, tested and tested again to make sure they “work” and they most certainly do!

That first burn...

Did you know candles have a “burn memory”? Once a burn pattern has been established, it can be difficult to change. When you first light your new Wood Wick Candle, be sure to let it burn right to the edge of the vessel. This may take a few hours depending on the vessel/wick size combination.
If you don’t allow your candle to burn right to the edge on the first burn, it may cause it to “tunnel”. This will make it more difficult for the wax around the edges of the jar to melt, causing the tunneling effect to continue with each burn. Eventually the tunnel will become too deep for fresh oxygen to flow in, and your candle will have trouble staying lit for more than short periods of time.

“Tunnelling” and how do I fix it?

To prevent this issue, make sure to give your candle enough time to develop a full melted wax pool that goes all the way to the edge of the vessel on the very first burn.
If your candle does tunnel, use some paper towel to soak up excess wax so the wick can breathe a little. Your goal is to reset the burn pool so it burns to the side of the vessel again- creating that “burn memory”

But I’m still having trouble!

Trim your wick! This is one of the absolute best tips we can give! Wood wicks need to be short and regular trimming can get you past any knots in the wood giving you grief in staying lit. Trim all of the burnt pieces off before each use. For relighting, tip the candle and relight on an angle. This will allow the flame to slowly reach across the wick.
